INVESTMENT & PARTNERSHIPS
Ecommerce investment, with a plan.
Ecommerce investment works best as a business-specific conversation: what the brand needs, what the founder wants and who can deliver the next stage. Capital and operating support each need a clear purpose.
Start with the constraint you need to solve
Is the next stage limited by stock funding, commercial expertise, management capacity or access to a new market? Describe the constraint before choosing a funding structure. More cash does not automatically resolve a lack of operating capacity.
Explain the proposed use of funds, the work required and the evidence behind the plan. A practical discussion makes the immediate operating needs visible alongside the longer-term ambition.
Capital for a plan
Set out what the money would fund, when it is needed and which assumptions still need testing.
Operational responsibility
Agree the roles, resources and decisions needed to deliver the plan.
Aligned ownership
Discuss the founder’s involvement, the partner’s contribution and the terms that connect them.
Ownership and involvement vary by business
A minority investment, a full acquisition and an operating partnership create different relationships. We consider selective direct acquisition or minority investment alongside founder and buyer introductions. Whether we operate a brand or partner with an operator depends on the business.
An operator’s contribution and an investor’s contribution should be described separately, even when one party supplies both. Agree who manages trading, who funds stock, how decisions are made and how progress will be reviewed.
What to bring to an investment discussion
A useful brief links current performance to a specific next step. Show the financial position, customer demand, stock cycle, main dependencies and founder responsibilities. Explain what has been tested and what remains an assumption.
Distinguish money entering the company from money paid to a founder for an ownership interest. Then consider the practical effect of the proposed terms, including decision rights and future funding needs, with advisers who understand the business.
- The current brand, customers, channels and trading position.
- The constraint and the plan to address it.
- Use of funds, operating resources and expected timing.
- Your preferred ownership and day-to-day involvement.
- The kind of investor or operator whose contribution would fit.
Begin with fit, then assess the terms
For founders, the next step is to set out the brand and the support you are exploring. For buyers and investors, it is to define the businesses you understand and the contribution you can make.
These pages provide a framework for those conversations. They do not offer an investment product, publish return forecasts or imply that a particular funding opportunity is available. Each prospective arrangement needs its own assessment.
Common questions
What is an ecommerce operating partner?
An operating partner takes responsibility for agreed work in the business. The role could involve commercial management, marketing or operations. Its authority, remuneration and any ownership interest must be defined for the arrangement.
Could investment be an alternative to selling?
It can be a route to consider when a founder wants to retain an interest and pursue a specific plan. It creates different obligations and decisions from a full sale, so compare the proposed terms and your preferred role.
